Type Locality and Naming

Center of Zhejiang coast. The type section is located at Zhangshu in Shengxian County, Zhejiang Province. It was named by Meng Xianmin in 1930 and surveyed by the Regional Geological Survey Team of Zhejiang Province in 1992. Geographical coordinates of the type section: 29°37′N, 120°48′E (GPS).


Lithology and Thickness

It is characterized by the basalts intercalated with mudstones, sandstones, conglomerates, diatomite, brown coals, and peats. The thickness is 172 m in the type section and varies from 6 m to 300 m in the district.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Shengxian Fm is in unconformable contact with the underlying Tiantai Fm.

Upper contact

The Shengxian Fm is in unconformable contact with the overlying Quaternary sandstones and conglomerates.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in Shengzhou City in Zhejiang Province.

Fossils

Abundant plants, including 46 families, 96 genera and 139 species. Mammals (cervids), fish (Cypriniformes), diatoms, and sporopollens are also found.
